The City of Pleasantville (population 1,689), is currently accepting applications for Chief of Police.

The City offers competitive wages and benefits package including, but not limited to, health, dental, vision, life insurance, paid vacation, personal days, sick leave, holidays, and IPERS.

The salary range for this position is $75,000-$85,000 depending on experience.

The Department:

At the Pleasantville Police Department, we demonstrate excellence by modeling the CORE 4 Values of Integrity, Respect, Professionalism, and Customer Service. Pleasantville Police is proactive in law enforcement and focuses on community policing. Typically, the department responds to around 1900 calls for service annually. One officer is assigned to a School Resource Officer for part of their shift. The department has two patrol vehicles which are both SUV’s. The Pleasantville Police Department is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure community through proactive law enforcement, continuous officer training, and a strong commitment to community policing.

The ideal candidate will:

  • Support and Enhance: Continue the positive direction currently existing in the department. This will include normal patrol details during their designated shift.

  • Commit to Succession Planning: Mentor, develop, and recognize future leaders within the department to ensure continued excellence.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience: Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in police services or (3) years of supervisory experience. Applicants separated from law enforcement for more than 24 months will not be considered for this position.
  • Certification: Must meet all Iowa Law Enforcement Academy requirements under Chapter 501 or obtain certification within six months of employment. Additionally, candidates must meet eligibility requirements mandated by State law to hold the position of Chief of Police.
  • Shall Possess and maintain a valid Iowa driver’s license.
  • Residency Requirement: Reside within the Pleasantville school district or be able to respond within 10 minutes within six (6) months of the day of hire or within a period of time negotiated with the city council.
  • Must possess excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.

 

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serve as the chief administrative officer of the Police Department and is the final departmental authority in all matters of personnel.
  • Enforces all ordinances of the Pleasantville Code of Ordinances.
  • Develop and administer goals, objectives, and procedures for the police department.
  • Analyze and assess programs, policies, and operational needs and make appropriate adjustments.
  • Identify and respond to sensitive community and organizational issues, concerns, and needs.
  • Select, supervise, train and evaluate staff; implement progressive discipline when necessary.
  • Prepares and presents the Police Department’s annual budget and monitors and controls all budgetary expenditures.
  • Interpret, apply, and make decisions in accordance with applicable federal, state and local policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Effectively use and qualify with law enforcement tools and weapons including firearms, defensive tactics, and other safety equipment.
  • Meet the physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform the assigned duties.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions and concerns of the general public.
  • Ability to recruit and retain your own staff.
  • Due to the structure of the Pleasantville Police Department, the Chief of Police will, at times, cover shifts for officers who are on vacation, in training, or on sick leave.
